Celtic v Borussia Monchengladbach preview: Brendand Rogers needs three points
Wednesday 19 October 2016 18:48, UK
Celtic and Borussia Monchengladbach go in search of their first wins in Group C of the Champions League when they meet at Celtic Park on Wednesday evening.
Brendan Rodgers' men took one point from their tough opening two games against Barcelona and Manchester City while Borussia Monchengladbach are one of four teams to have lost their two Champions League group games so far this season, alongside Club Brugge, Dinamo Zagreb and Legia Warsaw.
Celtic go into this game on the back of a 2-0 win over Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership with goals from Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele.
Meanwhile, Gladbach were held to a 0-0 draw with Hamburg - a game in which they missed two penalties.
Erik Sviatchenko is looking for Celtic Park to put fear into their opponents. The Denmark defender's memory is still fresh from an action-packed encounter with Manchester City last month when the 60,000-crowd rocked the Premier League stars in a pulsating 3-3 draw.
"When players and teams come here they need to be frightened," he said. "To draw a parallel to the City game you could see that they were struggling even though they are really big stars.
"So we will do our best to create that intensity in the game tomorrow and with the fans this combination will be good."
Team news
Defender Mikael Lustig and midfielder Nir Bitton return to the Celtic squad.
Both players missed the home win over Motherwell on Saturday after returning from the international break with Sweden and Israel respectively carrying knocks.
Midfielder Tom Rogic was rested after a long journey back from international duty with Australia and he too is back.
Meanwhile, on-loan Chelsea man Andreas Christensen has been ruled out of Wednesday's encounter in Glasgow for the visitors after picking up a gluteal muscle injury during the goalless draw with Hamburg. Strikers Raffael and Thorgan Hazard both are doubtful for the Celtic Park clash.
Opta stats
This is the first competitive meeting between Celtic and Borussia Monchengladbach.
Celtic have won only one of their last 10 games against German opposition, in all competitions (D2 L7), it was against VfB Stuttgart at home in the Last 16 of the 2002/03 UEFA Cup (3-1).
Borussia Monchengladbach have won none of their last five games against Scottish opposition (D3 L2), failing to score in four of them. However, their last encounter dates back to the 1986/87 UEFA Cup against Dundee Utd in the semi-finals (0-2 on aggregate).
Only once from six games previously has a Scottish side lost at home to a German side in the Champions League (W3 D2) - Rangers losing 2-0 to Stuttgart in November 2009.
The Bhoys have set a Champions League record for goals conceded in the opening two games of a campaign, conceding 10 goals (7-0 v Barcelona and 3-3 v Man City). The previous record was nine, set by Dynamo Kiev in 2006/07 and Braga in 2010/11.
Borussia Monchengladbach have lost three of their previous four away Champions League games (D1), failing to score in three of those four games including in their only away game so far this campaign (0-4 v Man City).
Dembele hit two goals in his first home Champions League appearance against Man City; the record for goals in the opening two home matches of the Champions League is four, held by Marco van Basten, Franck Sauzee, Ivan Zamorano, Frode Johnsen and Didier Drogba.
Hazard has had a hand in five goals in his last two starts in European competition for Monchengladbach (four goals, one assist).
Charlie Nicholas' prediction
It sounds crazy when you're in a group with Barcelona and Manchester City but this is the key game for Celtic being at home, when third place is the realistic target.
To get third place it's probably a must-win situation, but I'm concerned because they have to force it a bit more. It's a different sort of pressure with that atmosphere and you're now expected to win.
Gladbach are more equipped to be defensive-minded. I know they struggled with a 0-0 at the weekend and they're missing a couple of players, but they are solid.
They'll be a lot more organised than Manchester City's defence and wary of Sinclair and Dembele's pace. These games are different because Gladbach will frustrate, make the game a stop-start one, with the expectation of the fans very different.
Charlie predicts: 0-0 (14/1 with Sky Bet)
Betting
The Germans go into the game as slight favourites with 13/10 available on an away win. This is, according to the rankings, Celtic's most winnable fixture in this group and they can be backed at 19/10 with the draw a strong runner at 12/5.
If you fancy a Celtic win to nil then there is 5/1 on offer while Celtic to win and under 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 13/2.
Dembele is the man at the head of the betting in the scoring markets - he is a 5/1 shot to score first.
