Richie Bennett scored the only goal of the match as Carlisle picked up their first win of the season at pointless Cheltenham.
Scott Flinders did well to touch Bennett's header over the bar after a cross from Jerry Yates after 11 minutes as the visitors started on the front foot.
Yates headed over when well placed but Bennett soon grabbed the matchwinner, six minutes before the interval.
Ashley Nadesan, back at the club on another loan spell from Fleetwood, fed Bennett and he calmly placed the ball past Flinders.
Ryan Broom set up Conor Thomas but the Cheltenham midfielder saw his effort blocked by Anthony Gerrard, before Will Boyle and Nigel Atangana both saw headers cleared off the line for the hosts.
Carlisle nearly doubled their lead when Hallam Hope forced Flinders into another good save, while at the other end, Jee Fryer tipped Ben Tozer's shot onto the post.
Flinders denied Yates once more while defender Jordon Forster cleared off the line from Hope in the final minute as Carlisle held on for victory.
