Image: Phil Brown: Southend boss will make changes

Crawley could welcome back Gavin Tomlin for the visit of Southend in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The forward has yet to make an appearance this season after undergoing hernia surgery in July but boss Mark Yates has pencilled him in for a return against the Shrimpers.

Defenders Lanre Oyebanjo (knee), Joe McNerney (knee) and Jon Ashton (ankle) are set to miss out again, although all three are not too far away from being back in contention.

Midfielder Luke Rooney could be handed a start after returning from suspension as an unused substitute in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Plymouth.

Southend boss Phil Brown is ready to give some of his fringe players a run-out.

"There will be players who play in the game who haven't had a chance in the last three or four games for us. You don't want to look too far away from the league, you never do," he said.

Winger Stephen McLaughlin has been out with a virus but could come into contention after resuming training.

Defender John White is another who may feature while forward Noel Hunt has been carrying a knock which ruled him out of the 1-0 league defeat at Burton. Midfielder Kevan Hurst (knee) and defender Adam Barrett (hamstring) are other doubts.
