Jayden Stockley scored as Aberdeen beat Dundee 3-1 at Dens Park to move up to fourth in the Scottish Premiership

Aberdeen left it late to pick up their first away win in the Scottish Premiership since March after they beat Dundee 3-1 at Dens Park.

Dundee were looking for their first home win of the season and got off to a decent start when Kevin Holt put them in front but they were quickly pegged back by James Maddison's equaliser.

Aberdeen dominated the majority of the game but were made to wait before taking the lead, with a breakthrough eventually coming through substitute Jayden Stockley's powerful header.

Kenny McLean made sure of the points from the penalty spot in the closing stages, while Dundee were reduced to 10 men when Mark O'Hara picked up his second yellow card late on.

Derek McInnes' side started the better but, against the run of play, it was Dundee who opened the scoring just 13 minutes in following some intricate build-up play.

Nick Ross showed creativity to flick Paul McGowan's pass into the path of Holt at the first time of asking and the full-back showed excellent composure to rifle the ball past Joe Lewis in the Aberdeen goal from 12 yards.

The visitors continued to dominate possession, however, and found an equaliser just five minutes later.

Maddison, making his first start since arriving on loan from Norwich, did well to create space for himself, shaking off Dundee midfielders on the edge of the box before his shot somehow slipped under the body of Scott Bain.

Fayssal El Bakhtaoui went close for Dundee on the half-hour mark but his curling effort just dipped a couple of yards wide from the edge of the area.

Maddison looked lively and soon caught out Cammy Kerr near the Dundee box but his final pass was just behind Adam Rooney who was waiting for the delivery.

Three minutes into the second half a misplaced pass from Andrew Considine allowed McGowan through on goal but he skewed his shot well wide before Maddison sent a curling effort just off target.

Aberdeen skipper Graeme Shinnie then forced Bain into an outstanding save from 25 yards, with the goalkeeper just tipping the powerful effort on to the bar.

Bain was called into action again moments later, rushing out to block Maddison's effort after the midfielder burst through the middle and tried to lift his shot over the goalkeeper.

O'Hara then went close for the home side, taking the ball down nicely and turning well on the edge of the box before firing just over the bar on the volley.

Aberdeen were sloppy in possession at the back on a couple of occasions, with Anthony O'Connor dispossessed by Bakhtaoui but his cutback came off Considine and was gathered by Lewis.

With 17 minutes remaining, Aberdeen boss McInnes decided to make a double change with Wes Burns and Stockley coming on for Rooney and Niall McGinn and it was an inspired decision.

Just three minutes later Hayes used his pace on the right hand side to beat Holt and delivered an inviting ball into the box which was met by Stockley who powered his header past Bain.

Aberdeen then sealed the points with four minutes remaining when Julen Etxabeguren was adjudged to have brought down Burns in the box even though he appeared to win a chunk of the ball.

McLean stepped up and slammed the ball in off the underside of the bar to make sure of the win.

Dundee's disappointing afternoon was compounded in time added on when O'Hara was sent off after picking up his second booking of the game for a trip on Shinnie.
