Gareth Southgate has confirmed Jesse Lingard will start for England against Nigeria in Saturday's friendly at Wembley (kick-off 5.15pm).

The England boss is getting his first chance to see his 23-man squad in match action against another World Cup side ahead of their tournament opener against Tunisia on June 18.

Southgate insists starting Lingard does not mean it will be a straight battle between the Manchester United forward and Tottenham's Dele Alli for a starting berth against Tunisia in Volgograd.

"I don't see it as a straight contest between any individual, absolutely they could play together," he said.

"All of our attacking players have different attributes or strengths. Jesse is a fantastic player at recognising the space, working away from the ball, a great link between midfield and attack."

Southgate put his England squad through their paces on Friday, with Phil Jones absent after leaving the camp to attend the birth of his child. The Manchester United defender is also set to sit out the friendly.

Adam Lallana trained with the squad on Thursday and was again present on Friday, the Liverpool midfielder on the standby list having overcome a hamstring injury.

But Southgate gave no clues as to who would start in goal for England with Jack Butland, Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope the three goalkeepers in the World Cup squad.

"We know what we want to see in that area and we're clear on what we think. There's no need for me to say too much on that publicly," Southgate added.

"I've told the players what we're looking for in these two matches and haven't told them the team yet."

Victor Moses has joined up with the Nigeria national team camp in London ahead of the friendly on Saturday.

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has reduced his squad to 25, leaving out Lokomotiv Plovdiv defender Stephen Eze, Kano Pillars striker Junior Lokosa, Uche Agbo and goalkeeper Dele Ajiboye.

Former Chelsea midfielder Jon Obi Mikel is set to lead the Nigeria team out at Wembley; a stadium where he holds fond memories having won the FA Cup three times there. He is hoping for another special occasion as Nigeria look for an upset victory.

He said: "It's so nice to come back to Wembley. I have played here many times in so many finals and have managed to have great success here and win pretty much all of the finals I have played.

"So let's hope tomorrow it can repeat itself."
