England vs Switzerland preview: Wayne Rooney targets record
Tuesday 8 September 2015 19:40, UK
Wayne Rooney will be looking to surpass Sir Bobby Charlton as England's all-time leading goalscorer when Switzerland travel to Wembley on Tuesday evening.
The Manchester United captain drew level with Charlton on 49 goals as his 13th-minute penalty guided Roy Hodgson's side to a comprehensive 6-0 victory over Group E minnows San Marino on Saturday.
That result saw the Three Lions become the first team to qualify for next summer's European Championships.
And England, who will be looking to maintain their 100 per cent record in qualification, can seal their passage to France as group winners if they avoid defeat to second-placed Switzerland.
Switzerland, meanwhile, will have aspirations of topping the group themselves and head to Wembley on the back of a stunning late comeback at home to Slovenia.
Vladimir Petkovic's side overcame a two-goal deficit in the final 10 minutes to seal a 3-2 win on Saturday, and victory on Tuesday would see them close the gap on group leaders England to three points.
Team news
Midfielder Michael Carrick has been ruled out of Tuesday's game, the Football Association have confirmed.
The 34-year-old, who was an unused substitute against San Marino, had been expected to feature at Wembley but he has returned to his club Manchester United for treatment.
Carrick's injury could see Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey handed another starting berth following his impressive display against San Marino.
Hodgson will reveal whether Shelvey will start for the second game in succession on Tuesday, but the England manager has confirmed he will ring the changes for the visit of Switzerland.
He said: "There will be changes for this one, I can give you that. We will take the game very seriously and we would dearly love to put on a good performance and win the game."
