Everton v Watford preview: Hornets make top-flight return
Saturday 8 August 2015 16:37, UK
Everton host Watford as the Hornets prepare for the first game of their Premier League return.
Quique Flores' side have already hit double figures in terms of summer signings following Watford's promotion from the Championship in May, with Etienne Capoue, Steven Berghuis and Valon Behrami among those in line for their debuts.
Everton, meanwhile, have had a far quieter summer, with just three players arriving through the doors at Goodison Park.
Gerard Deulofeu has returned following his loan stint with the Toffees a couple of seasons ago, Tom Cleverley has come in from Manchester United and youngster David Henen has signed from Olympiakos.
Roberto Martinez will be hoping to get off to a flying start in a bid to put a disappointing 2014/15 campaign behind him, which saw Everton finish 11th in the Premier League.
Team news
Defender John Stones and winger Kevin Mirallas are expected to be available, while Cleverley is set to make his debut after joining from Manchester United. But there are doubts over two forwards - fellow summer recruit Deulofeu and striker Romelu Lukaku, both having had hamstring issues.
Tony Hibbert (knee), Darron Gibson (abductor), Muhamed Besic, Steven Pienaar and Aiden McGeady (all hamstring) definitely miss out.
Watford will be without suspended defender Miguel Britos and new goalkeeper Giedrius Arlauskis is also banned, while midfielder Almen Abdi is a doubt with a knee injury.
A late decision will be taken on Dutch signing Berghuis (leg), but Joel Ekstrand remains sidelined with the cruciate knee injury he sustained in March.
Stats
Everton lost their final two Premier League games at Goodison Park last season, but have not lost three successive home Premier League games since the first three home games of 2008/09.
This will be Watford's third season in the top flight in 27 years and finished bottom in their two previous seasons in the Premier League, in 2000 and 2007.
Watford have won the last meetings with Watford in all competitions, including all four Premier League games.
There has been a goal scored in the final five minutes of each of the last four Premier League meetings between the teams.
Merson's prediction
I worry about Everton this year. The situation surrounding John Stones – will he, won’t he be there? – coupled with run of tough games they’ve got at the start of the season makes this a must-win game.
Watford's one saving grace could be Troy Deeney. I can’t wait to see how he gets on in the Premier League having ripped up the Championship for a few years. Everton should just have enough to get the win, in what is a must-win game for the Toffees.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-0 (15/2 with Sky Bet)
Betting
Everton are odds-on with Sky Bet to launch their Premier League campaign with three points, with Watford 4/1 shots to mark their return to the top flight with a win. Five of the last six meetings between these sides have seen both sides scoring and Everton to win with both sides finding the net is 5/2.
Steven Naismith and Watford's Deeney both to score in 90 minutes is available at 17/2. This match forms part of the Soccer Saturday Price Boost with the Toffees, Bournemouth and Leicester all to win their matches boosted from 7/1 to 10/1.
