Don Cowie scored an 87th-minute winner as Hearts beat Edinburgh rivals Hibernian 1-0 to reach the fifth round of the Scottish Cup at Tynecastle.

Cowie got the slightest touch on a Christophe Berra header from a corner, which Hibs' Ofir Marciano and John McGinn failed to keep out on the line.

Both sides had clear chances to score in the second half before the winner, with Man Utd loanee Demetri Mitchell forcing a fine save out of Marciano at one end, before Hibs' Martin Boyle was denied by Jon McLaughlin at the other.

It's Hearts' first win over Hibs in nine games, and they will play Albion Rovers or St Johnstone in the fifth round on the weekend of February 10.

Hearts had two clear chances to take the lead in the first half; first debutant Steven Naismith poked inches wide of the near post having taken the ball around Marciano from Manuel Milinkovic's through ball, before Esmael Goncalves forced the Hibs stopper into a good save at an angle, again from Milinkovic's ball over the defence.

Hibs had a fine chance of their own, but Boyle could only strike wide from Oli Shaw's delightful ball across the face of goal.

The impressive Mitchell let fly with a back-post effort before the hour mark, but Marciano somehow clawed the ball away at the near post with a superb stop.

McLaughlin did similar with just four minutes remaining at the other end, tipping over Boyle's volleyed effort from a flicked on cross, but as Hibs looked to be heading for a 10th straight game without defeat against Hearts, the hosts struck.

Getting on the end of a deep corner, Berra towered over the Hibs defence to head towards goal, and his effort was flicked over the line by Cowie by just half a foot, despite the best efforts of both Marciano and McGinn on the line.

Despite a late Hibs rally, 2012 Scottish Cup winners Hearts held on to reach the fifth round.

    The managers

Craig Levein: It was a tough match, I knew we would get that determination because we have it in the group. I think we provided most of the quality in this game, and had the better chances. To beat your rivals after not beating them for nine games is important.

Neil Lennon: There's nothing much in the game really, it could have ended either way. It's a very scrappy goal, and it's nice to see a linesman doing his job properly on that side!

Man of the match - Demetri Mitchell

The Manchester United loanee provided pace and impetus down the left flank for Hearts in both halves on his debut, and though his final delivery was often missing, the youngster found himself in space regularly.

    What's next

Hearts now travel to Hamilton in the Premiership on Wednesday night, while Hibs go to Dundee in the Premiership on the same night.
