Huddersfield 5-0 Charlton: Terriers hit five past struggling Addicks

Huddersfield continue to gain momentum under head coach David Wagner as a thumping 5-0 success over Sky Bet Championship strugglers Charlton earned them their biggest win of the season.

Town skipper Mark Hudson and Nahki Wells struck in the first half and further goals after the break from Jamie Paterson, substitute Duane Holmes and Jason Davidson heaped more pressure on Charlton's under-fire interim boss Karel Fraeye.

Fraeye has now won only two of his 13 league games in charge and his misery was complete when substitute Reza Ghoochannejhad was sent off late on for two yellow cards in just over a minute.

Huddersfield's players have embraced former Borussia Dortmund reserve-team coach Wagner's brand of "full-throttle" football and at times left Charlton chasing shadows to register their fifth league win in eight games.

Town started full of purpose, with midfielder Joe Lolley in particular taking the game to the Londoners and, after defender Tommy Smith shot wide from outside the area, the home side took a deserved 17th-minute lead.

Paterson, on loan from Nottingham Forest, sent the ball over following a short corner and Hudson climbed highest to head home his first goal of the season.

The hosts soon went in search of a second. Harry Bunn's shot was blocked by Charlton winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson and the Town forward then crashed a shot straight at visiting goalkeeper Stephen Henderson following a sweeping move involving Lolley again.

Charlton had nothing to show for their first-half efforts other than blocked long-range shots from on-loan West Ham midfielder Diego Poyet and Callum Harriott, while Chris Solly and Rhys Williams were both booked for clumsy tackles borne out of frustration.

It got worse for Charlton a minute before the break when Town left them with a mountain to climb. Bunn's corner was deflected to the far post and right-back Smith played it back across goal for Wells to tap home his 10th goal of the season from barely a yard out.

Henderson was forced to save Lolley's corner with his thigh soon after the restart and at the other end Town goalkeeper Jed Steer comfortably made his first save of the match from Poyet's low 20-yard shot.

Defender Morgan Fox became the third Charlton player booked by referee Geoff Eltringham, for his foul on Lolley, before Town midfielder Emyr Huws was replaced by Holmes.

Town were hungry for more and Wells planted his first-time volley from left-back Jason Davidson's fine cross straight at Henderson and then, in the 62nd minute, blazed over the crossbar when he should have done better at the far post.

Bunn set up Huddersfield's third in the 75th minute, with Paterson firing home a low shot from the edge of the area and within four minutes Kyle Dempsey released fellow substitute Holmes to score his first senior goal via a deflection.

It was already Town's biggest win of the season but Australian left-back Davidson had time to score his first goal in English football, steering home an angled shot from six yards in time added on.
