Alex McLeish will make several changes when Scotland take on Hungary in Budapest on Tuesday night

Scotland manager Alex McLeish will pick a more experienced team for his second match in charge against Hungary on Tuesday (kick-off 7pm).

McLeish handed out five debuts - four of them from the start - as his latest tenure began with a 1-0 defeat by Costa Rica at Hampden Park on Friday.

But there will be a shift of focus in Budapest with McLeish switching to a more tried and tested line-up.

"It will be a more experienced team," he said. "It will players who have had caps before and who have experienced the international arena. That will be more evident."

McLeish believes there is enough strength in depth after losing three players to injury, including two of the more experienced players, Grant Hanley and Matt Ritchie, along with Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

"We had some casualties," he added. "We had to send some players home as they have club action at the end of the week, so no point in holding on to anybody.

"But the squad's strong enough. I'd say every member of the squad has stood up really well in training and I feel that any of them could play for the national team."

McLeish may have started his second stint as Scotland manager with defeat at a sparsely populated Hampden Park, but he was encouraged by much of what he saw against Costa Rica who are preparing for the World Cup.

Now he wants to combine quality with a positive result against Hungary - a team ranked 50th in the world - 18 places behind Scotland.

"I am still looking at performance level," McLeish said. "We want to try to get a good result with a good performance.

"Obviously that would be encouraging and gives the players evidence that they're on track to where we want to go."

McLeish introduced a 3-4-3 formation on Friday, a departure on the 4-2-3-1 system generally favoured by his predecessor, Gordon Strachan.

The tactics worked better in the second half when Scotland pressed the ball better and got on the front foot, and McLeish will continue trying to instil some flexibility into his team's shape.

"We have obviously learned some things and we can try different players if it's the same formation, or a four at the back, then we have those options as well," the former Aberdeen and Scotland defender said.

"Although we are a bit short of right-sided defenders, Grant Hanley is away back and Russell Martin never made it. We have a dearth of right-footers and loads of lefties.

"There's a chance it will be the same system but we will look at other systems. We want to be flexible, we have to be ready to change tactics at any given moment. "I want to get the players used to playing in different formations and different styles."
