Juventus v Man City preview: Pellegrini's men aim for top spot
Wednesday 25 November 2015 19:49, UK
Manchester City can secure top spot in Group D with a game to spare if they beat Juventus on Wednesday night.
Manuel Pellegrini's men have already booked their place in the knockout stages of this season's Champions League, winning three of their opening four games.
Now, attention turns to finishing top of the group, in an attempt to avoid the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the last 16.
City will be hoping to return to winning ways following their 4-1 Saturday Night Football defeat by Liverpool in the Premier League. Prior to that, Pellegrini's side were held by Aston Villa, and they have now dropped to third.
In the Champions League though, form has not been a problem for Manchester City. They have won their last three matches, scoring seven and conceding just three.
The English side's only defeat in this season's competition came in their opener against Wednesday's opponents Juventus, at the Etihad Stadium in September.
Giorgio Chiellini headed into his own net to give City the lead in the second half, before Juventus came back to win the game with goals from Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata.
After winning a domestic double and reaching the Champions League final last season, Juventus have struggled for form this term.
Their victory over City in September acted as something of a catalyst, but they have only risen as high as sixth in Serie A, with pressure mounting on manager Massimiliano Allegri.
Juventus can overtake Manchester City to go top of Group D with a win, which will also see them secure their place in the knockout stages.
Team news
City are sweating on the fitness of both Vincent Kompany (calf) and David Silva (ankle) after the pair missed training on Tuesday morning.
Sergio Aguero is set to start after recovering from a hamstring injury suffered on international duty in October, but Pellegrini will be without Samir Nasri and Wilfried Bony for the trip to Turin.
Juventus are without suspended midfielder Hernanes, while Sami Khedira and Roberto Pereyra (both thigh) are sidelined.
Elsewhere, Martin Caceres (thigh) and former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra (ankle) are both doubts for the Italian champions.
Opta stats
Juventus are unbeaten in their last four competitive games against Man City (W2 D2). City's only win against the Turin side came in the 1976/77 UEFA Cup (1-0 in the first leg, 2-1 on aggregate for Juventus).
Man City have never scored more than one goal against Juventus (5 games).
Juventus are unbeaten in their last 11 Champions League games at the Juventus Stadium (W7 D4), the last team to beat them on home soil being Bayern Munich in April 2013 (0-2).
Juventus have yet to concede a home goal in the Champions League this season.
Juventus have lost only one of their last 14 Champions League games (W8 D5) - the 2015 final against Barcelona.
Man City have made it through to the knockout stages of the Champions League for the third consecutive season. However, they have never progressed further than the last 16.
None of Man City's 32 Champions League games has ended goalless - only Basel have played more games in the competition without a goalless draw (46).
Man City have kept four clean sheets in their 32 Champions League games.
Man City's eight goals in this season's Champions League have been scored by eight different players: Demichelis, Aguero, De Bruyne, Sterling, Fernandinho, Bony and two own goals (Chiellini and Rami).
Paul Pogba is the player who has had the most attempts without finding the back of the net in this season's Champions League: 17 shots.
Patrice Evra's next Champions League game will be his 100th in the competition. He will be the second French player to reach this tally after Thierry Henry (112 appearances).
Juventus have picked up more red cards than any other team in the Champions League (21 since 1992/93).
Charlie Nicholas' prediction
It's another awkward one and I'm not sure which side will go out and look to take control of this game.
It will be interesting to see what Manuel Pellegrini does with Yaya Toure after hauling him off at half-time against Liverpool and without him the likes of Paul Pogba make Juventus the better team in the middle of the park.
I'm guessing David Silva will struggle to make it, while Pellegrini has to make another decision on Sergio Aguero following his latest lay-off. City might have to look to work on the counter-attack, which they can do with the pace of Raheem Sterling, who suits that sort of game more, as Juve attempt to squeeze.
Charlie predicts 1-1 with Raheem Sterling to score first (40/1 with Sky Bet)
Betting
City are Sky Bet's 12/5 outsiders for the victory on Wednesday night, with Juventus favoured at 5/4, while the draw is priced at 23/10.
Pellegrini's men are, however, odds-on to win the group, with their hosts 13/8 to deny them a favourable spot in the draw.
Mandzukic is the marginal favourite in the first goalscorer betting at 9/2, closely followed by 5/1 chance Aguero, who is enhanced from 3/1 to 5/1 to score in a City win in Sky Bet's pre-match Price Boosts.
The Soccer Saturday pundits and Jamie Redknapp have provided Sky Bet with their usual tips, including Matt Le Tissier's 25/1 fancy for Aguero to score first in a 1-1 draw.
