Liverpool v West Brom preview: Reds aim to return to winning ways
Sunday 13 December 2015 16:34, UK
Philippe Coutinho is in line to return for Liverpool when they welcome West Brom to Anfield on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp will hope that the Brazilian can provide the creativity needed to get his Liverpool team scoring again after their failure to find the net in their last two games.
Defeat at Newcastle last weekend saw the Reds miss the chance to move to within three points of the Champions League places but they could climb as high as sixth with a win against the Baggies.
However, defeat could see them slip into the bottom half and see West Brom jump to within a point of the Merseysiders.
Tony Pulis' team are unbeaten in three, beating Arsenal at The Hawthorns before drawing their last two 1-1 against West Ham and Tottenham.
Team news
After coming off the bench in the goalless Europa League draw with Sion, Brazilian playmaker Coutinho is in line for a return to the starting line-up.
Defender Martin Skrtel, on the bench in Switzerland, and Alberto Moreno and Lucas Leiva, who were both left at home in midweek, are also set to return to the team.
Stephane Sessegnon is out of the trip to Liverpool with a hamstring injury.
The forward limped off in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Tottenham and will not feature for the Baggies at Anfield but Claudio Yacob is available again after suspension.
Ben Foster remains sidelined with the knee injury he suffered in March and continues to battle back from a set-back he suffered in September but is not expected to play until the new year.
Opta stats
Liverpool have won 19 and lost just two of the last 25 league games against West Brom at Anfield.
West Brom's last four Premier League away wins have all been by a 1-0 scoreline.
Liverpool have allowed fewer shots on target against them than any other team in the top flight this season (43).
Only Aston Villa (42) have fired in fewer shots on target than West Brom (46) this season.
In the last 24 Premier League matches, West Brom (30) have taken just one point less than Liverpool (31).
Merson's prediction
Surely Liverpool can't win the title? On Sunday at Newcastle they were atrocious. Jurgen Klopp left Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge out against Newcastle, sticks Lucas and Joe Allen in midfield. Benteke was strolling around looking like he was still playing for Villa.
I can't see them winning the title, but I'll go for them to win this one narrowly. I think they find it hard to break down teams at home.
West Brom have finally started looking like a Tony Pulis team in recent weeks, nearly a year after he took over. It isn't brilliant to watch but Pulis will keep them in the league, and you have to stay in the top flight this year. I dread to think what's going to happen in January, because people can't stick, they have to twist. With the amount of money coming in next year, you have to be playing in the Premier League.
