Manchester United's hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League hang in the balance after they were held to a 0-0 draw by PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard missed United's best chances either side of half-time as PSV held on to frustrate Louis van Gaal's side, who would have qualified with a win.

The result leaves United in second place in Group B, just a point above PSV in third and facing a trip to first-place Wolfsburg in the final game.

A win against the German side would see United finish top of the group but if PSV win at home to bottom side CSKA Moscow, a defeat or draw for United in Wolfsburg would see them drop out of the Champions League and into the Europa League.

United, who made four changes from the side that beat Watford on Saturday, were looking to make up for the 2-1 defeat in Eindhoven on the opening week of Group B, but the first half at Old Trafford lacked intensity and clear-cut chances.

First, Lingard was put through on goal by Wayne Rooney on the left-hand side, but his first touch allowed PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet to gather the ball at the United youngster's feet.

Zoet then saved on the line from Morgan Schneiderlin's poked effort after a Daley Blind corner, before Martial failed to get the better of the Dutchman from 10 yards as the ball fell kindly to him from Lingard's blocked shot.

One of the visitors' rare first-half attacks resulted in a chance, but David de Gea was at his best to save and hold Jorrit Hendrix's curling effort from 16 yards.

Lingard's glancing header from Martial's cross from the right after the break dropped just wide of Zoet's right-hand post, before United's best chance of the game went amiss.

Substitute Ashley Young centred for Lingard with 17 minutes remaining but the 22-year-old, in yards of space, miscued his effort from 10 yards over Zoet's bar.

PSV held on for a point that keeps United sweating on their place at the next stage - and Van Gaal's men were booed off at the final whistle.
