Borussia Monchengladbach v Barcelona preview: Visitors without Lionel Messi
Wednesday 28 September 2016 20:58, UK
Barcelona may be without Lionel Messi, but they still have plenty of attacking options for the trip to Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League, on Wednesday.
Luis Suarez, Neymar, Ivan Rakitic, Arda Turan and Andres Iniesta have all travelled to Germany for the Group C fixture, with the Catalan club top of the four-team table after a 7-0 hammering of Celtic on the opening matchday.
Monchengladbach suffered a disappointing 4-0 loss against Manchester City in their opener, but have been boosted by the news that manager Andre Schubert has extended his contract with the Bundesliga club until 2019.
Schubert has developed an exciting squad at Monchengladbach en-route to achieving Champions League qualification, and defender Oscar Wendt is excited about the opportunities that Europe's elite competition bring.
"We are happy to be playing against one of the world's best teams," Wendt said. "And it is even better that they are coming to us on Wednesday."
"But we are no fans of Barcelona and do not want to play a supporting role on the night. We want to give it all we have and make something special out of it."
Team news
Barcelona are expected to recall Rakitic, Iniesta, Jordi Alba and Javier Mascherano after resting them at the weekend, with Enrique happy with his options in the absence of Messi.
"I have different kinds of players and that gives me a lot of options," the Barca boss said. "Depending on who we are playing and the players I have available, I will pick the ones that I think are right for the situation."
Monchengladbach have Raffael back from a thigh injury, while Mahmoud Dahoud is also available after making it through his comeback game against Ingolstadt.
Match stats
Monchengladbach are facing Barcelona for the first time in European competition, but have gone 13 home games against Spanish opposition without a clean sheet.
Against teams from Spain in European competition, Monchengladbach have managed just one victory in their last nine attempts (D2 L6); that win did come in the most recent fixture however (v Sevilla, November 2015).
Barcelona have failed to win their last three matches in Germany (D1 L2).
Barca are unbeaten in their last five away games played in the Champions League group stage (W3 D2).
Barcelona recorded their biggest win in a Champions League/European Cup game in their last outing (7-0 v Celtic).
Barcelona have won the Champions League in four of the last 11 seasons. No other team has won it more than twice in the same period (Real Madrid, 2).
Barcelona have reached the Champions League semi-finals in seven of the last nine seasons. The only exceptions were in 2013/14 & 2015/16, when they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Atletico Madrid on both occasions.
Neymar assisted four goals in Barcelona's opening game of the Champions League this season, the first player to manage that feat since Zlatan Ibrahimovic in November 2012 for PSG.
Lionel Messi has scored nine goals in his last seven Champions League games.
Luis Suarez has been directly involved in 24 goals in 20 CL apps for Barcelona (17 goals and seven assists).
