Javier Mascherano has refused to rule out a Premier League return, and added that despite his love for former club Liverpool, he would consider a move to another side.

The 31-year-old swapped Liverpool for Barcelona in the summer of 2010, and revealed that he will always hold a place in his heart for the Reds.

"My feeling for Liverpool does not mean I'm tied to them," he said in an interview with The Independent.

"If in the future a Premier League team was interested in me and I had the chance to go back, you can't say: 'No, I would only play for one team'. I don't know what I would do."

While the Argentine admitted he could return to the Premier League, he downplayed talk that he could follow former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola to Manchester City.

"No, no, Pep is not going to call me," he added. "He will not call me, no, no, no. But returning to the Premier League? I don't know."

Mascherano left Liverpool shortly after the arrival of Roy Hodgson, who managed the club for just over six months. Liverpool have sacked two managers since - Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers - and Mascherano believes that current boss Jurgen Klopp is the ideal fit.

"Jurgen Klopp is a perfect coach for Liverpool. He is very much of the people. He likes to get close to people and that is what the people of Liverpool are like," he said.

"I always say that nowhere have I been treated as well as I was treated there."
