Tunnel Talk with Alan Smith and Patrick Davison

Beleaguered Newcastle showed real fight despite having to settle for a 2-2 draw against Chelsea, Alan Smith told Patrick Davison.

Co-commentator Smith, speaking to Sky Sports reporter Davison in the latest Tunnel Talk series, reflected on a Saturday Night Football encounter that saw Jose Mourinho's men come from two goals down to earn a late point.

Steve McClaren's wait for a first Premier League win on Tyneside continues but Smith reckons the Magpies boss will be proud of a much-improved performance after a Capital One Cup exit to Sheffield Wednesday in midweek compounded their league woes.

"At 2-0 up, you're hoping to see it out but deep down he must be immensely proud of the team," Smith said.

"The only way was up after that Sheffield Wednesday peformance and it was up. They showed fight and desire. Hopefully they'll be thinking it can be the signal for better things to come."

Smith admitted Chelsea "behaved like champions" after the interval - but agreed with Jose Mourinho that they missed Diego Costa.
