Prince Ali of Jordan has confirmed he will bid to become the next FIFA president. It's also a big day for Michel Platini who is currently on a 90-day ban.

Prince Ali of Jordan has confirmed he will bid to become the next FIFA president.

The Jordanian is not naming the five nominators who backed him ahead of the October 26 deadline for contenders.

Prince Ali failed to unseat Sepp Blatter in May's election but the president's subsequent resignation created a vacancy again. The new vote will take place on February 26.

Blatter was suspended from his job last week and is under criminal investigation over alleged wrongdoing as president.

Prince Ali said: "I am confident that FIFA can emerge from this difficult period with its reputation restored and become an organisation that is once again viewed with respect."

"This time of crisis at FIFA is an opportunity for positive change. Many good ideas have emerged in the current discussion over FIFA's future.

"A better future will only come if ideas turn into action - and that will only happen if FIFA has the right leadership."

Michel Platini's future in football will become clearer on Thursday when UEFA members meet in Switzerland to discuss his role as president and his bid for the FIFA presidency.

The Frenchman faces losing the backing of a number of European football associations in the wake of his £1.3m payment from Blatter as he seeks to become head of world football's governing body.

No written contract for the payment, received by Platini with respect to work undertaken for Blatter, was provided to FIFA's ethics committee, which has provisionally suspended UEFA president Platini and Blatter for 90 days pending a disciplinary hearing.
