Manchester United did make an offer for Barcelona forward Neymar over the summer, says the player's father.

In August, Barcelona denied rumours the Premier League club had made a world-record offer for the 23-year-old, while the player himself admitted there were conversations, but "nothing concrete".

Neymar Santos Sr, however, has confirmed United made a bid for his son during the transfer window, but Barca rejected the approach immediately.

"The offer reached Barcelona and the club contacted us saying they were not going to sell," Neymar Sr told Brazilian TV station Boa Tarde Fox.

"They asked if we were interested, but that wasn't the case. Barcelona are not selling, he has three years still to go on his contract.

"It was Manchester's deal, but that offer is not on the table now, it has fallen through."

Louis van Gaal invested elsewhere in attacking talent in the summer, bringing in Memphis Depay from PSV and Anthony Martial, who has hit the ground running at Old Trafford.

Neymar, meanwhile, enjoyed a superb second season at the Nou Camp, firing in 39 goals in all competition.

The Brazil international has four goals in six La Liga appearances, and is set to feature for Barcelona when they take on Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.
