Lionel Messi joins the 50 international goals club... but who else is on the list?
Wednesday 30 March 2016 14:14, UK
Lionel Messi joined an elite club on Tuesday as he netted his 50th international goal for Argentina in a World Cup qualifying win over Bolivia.
The Barcelona star netted a penalty in the second half as his side won 2-0, taking his record to a half century of goals in 107 caps for the South American nation.
Here, we take a look at some of the other active internationals with more than 50 goals...
Robbie Keane - 67 goals in 143 caps for Republic of Ireland
He may be playing more of a bit-part role for the Republic of Ireland these days, but Keane is still part of the setup and no active player has more international goals than him.
The LA Galaxy striker will be hoping to add a few more at Euro 2016 this summer.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic - 62 goals in 112 caps for Sweden
Ibrahimovic made his international debut for Sweden in 2001, and has since gone on to average more than a goal every other game for his country.
The PSG striker's Sweden side will go toe-to-toe with Keane's Ireland in their Euro 2016 opener in June.
Carlos Ruiz - 60 goals in 126 caps for Guatemala
A less familiar name on the list, 36-year-old Ruiz is still going strong for Guatemala and bagged his 60th strike against the USA in a World Cup qualifier last week.
Despite his exploits since his debut in 1998, he has never had the opportunity to test his skills at a World Cup as they've never qualified.
Younis Mahmoud - 57 goals in 148 caps for Iraq
Iraq's highest-ever appearance maker is also their third highest-ever goalscorer as Mahmoud has netted 57 goals in 148 caps.
He is currently plying his trade for Al-Talaba in the Iraqi Premier League.
Cristiano Ronaldo - 55 goals in 123 caps for Portugal
Ronaldo's first international goal for Portugal came during Euro 2004 on home turf in their opener against Greece - in a game they lost 2-1.
The Real Madrid forward has netted 54 more times for his nation since, but has never been able to fire them beyond the semi-final of a major tournament.
Wayne Rooney - 51 goals in 109 caps for England
Rooney surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton's record as England's record goalscorer last year, and added a 51st against France in a friendly in November.
England's captain also only needs 17 more caps to surpass Peter Shilton as their record appearance maker, and seven more to overtake David Beckham in terms of outfield players.
Sunil Chhetri - 50 goals in 88 caps for India
The only player on this least to have achieved a half century of goals in less than 100 caps.
Chhetri, 31, has spent most of his career in India except for brief stints with the Kansas City Wizards in 2010 and Sporting Lisbon's B team in 2013.
Robin van Persie - 50 goals in 101 caps for Netherlands
Despite not being selected for the latest squad, Van Persie is still active in international football for the Netherlands and is their highest ever goalscorer with 50 goals in 101 games.
With the Dutch failing to qualify for the Euros and coach Danny Blind looking to the future, it remains to be seen whether he will get the opportunity to add to his tally.
