Germany defender Mats Hummels has raised doubts about his participation at the upcoming European Championship after admitting it would be a "long time" before he returns to full fitness.

Hummels was expected to start in the centre of defence for Die Mannschaft in France this summer but suffered a torn calf muscle while playing for Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup final on May 21.

The 27 year-old, who has won 42 caps for Germany, has not trained with the national side in the run up to this summer's tournament and missed the 3-1 friendly defeat to Slovakia in Augsburg on Sunday.

However, while Hummels admits he will not be fit in time for Germany's opening Group C match against Ukraine in Lille on June 11, he does still hope to play a role for his country in France this summer.

"It's going to take a while until I can kick a ball again," said Hummels, who was targeting Germany's second group match against Poland on June 15 as a possible return date.

"First of all, I need to be 100 percent fit. We'll have to see which game I can aim for. Perhaps it won't be ready, or maybe even for the second.

"You probably won't see me train with the team in Ascona at all."
