Former Liverpool left-back John Arne Riise has returned to the Indian Super League (ISL), joining Marco Materazzi’s Chennaiyin FC for the forthcoming season.

Riise appeared as a studio guest on Soccer AM earlier this month and said he was keen to return to playing after appearing to announce his retirement in June following a spell with hometown club Aalesunds FK.

The 35-year-old, who won the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League during a seven-year spell at Liverpool, played in last season's ISL, helping Delhi Dynamos reach the semi-finals.

"Back in June I decided to take a break from football but I always kept the door open for a return," Riise said.

"After speaking to Marco I found the motivation again to work hard so I would like to thank Marco and the Chennaiyin FC owners for believing in me.

"Marco especially had a big influence in my decision. I am honoured to have the chance to play and work under Marco. Working closely with him will be a great experience for me for my future coaching career also.
