Steven Anderson has been named the new captain of Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone following the retirement of Dave Mackay.

Defender Anderson, 30, has been with the Saints since 2004 and became the club's all-time record appearance maker earlier this year when he made his 362nd appearance.

He signed a new contract in May which will keep him at McDiarmid Park until at least 2018 and manager Tommy Wright had no hesitation in handing him the captain's armband.

"It was an easy decision for me," said Wright. "Steven is the longest-serving player at the club, a leader on the pitch, and is perfect to follow in Dave's footsteps."

Mackay led Saints to their first ever Scottish Cup victory two years ago but announced his retirement last week, having been battling with a hip injury which has kept him on the sidelines since January.

Chris Millar and Brian Easton will continue as joint-vice captains.
