Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen handled the ball outside the box in their win over Sporting Gijon and got away with it

Barcelona stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen appeared to handle outside the area during the win over Sporting Gijon - but escaped a booking.

The goalkeeper raced forward to collect a long pass from Jorge Mere but over-estimated his run, seemingly ending up just inside the 'D' at the top of the box with the ball in his hands.

Realising that he may be outside the area, he threw the ball back into the box before throwing himself on top of it as the Gijon players, staff and fans around the stadium called for a handball.

However, Ter Stegen protested his innocence with the referee agreeing, and the stopper was not shown a card of any colour with the home side receiving a free kick on the edge of the area - which did not beat the wall.

The Germany international went on to keep a clean sheet as Barcelona beat Gijon 5-0, with Luis Suarez opening the scoring nine minutes after the handball incident.

Rafinha doubled the lead before half-time with Arda Turan and a Neymar double competing the scoring, and Gijon having captain Alberto Lora sent off.
