Manchester City won the FA Women's Super League for the first time in their history with a 2-0 win over last season's champions Chelsea on Sunday.

Goals from Jill Scott and Toni Duggan either side of half-time secured the victory in what was a dominant display for Nick Cushing's side at the Academy Stadium.

City, who have won 13 and drawn two of their last 15 games, needed just one point to dethrone the Blues in front of a record crowd of 4,096 as they went into the game seven points clear of their rivals.

Manchester City Women, who have scored 35 goals in the league and conceded just three all season, have just one game of their campaign left when they face Birmingham City in the Continental Tyres Cup Final at the CFA Stadium.

In a cagey first half, chances were few and far between until City got themselves a succession of corners which finally led to the opener.

Duggan's floated ball in was flicked on by Scott and eventually went in off Chelsea captain Katie Chapman.

Emma Hayes' Chelsea Ladies struggled to respond against the home side's watertight defence and City came out flying after the break, with Nikita Parris going close to a second.

The clincher did arrive minutes after though when Lucy Bronze was felled by her England team mate Gilly Flaherty, and it was left to Duggan to step up and send Becky Spencer the wrong way from the spot.

Chelsea's best chance came too late for the visitors, when sub Beth England ran through on goal but could only hit her effort straight at Karen Bardsley.

The win for City sparked joyous scenes at full-time, with the champions celebrating their title success in front of the home crowd.
