Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo's position is under review, according to Sky sources.

Villa have made a poor start to life in the Sky Bet Championship and new owner Tony Xia is reportedly considering his options.

The Midlands club were relegated from the Premier League after a miserable campaign last season and things have not improved following the appointment of Di Matteo.

Saturday's 2-0 defeat at home to Preston left Villa 19th in the Championship, with only one win from their opening 11 games - although they have also lost just three times, recording seven draws.

Seen as leading promotion contenders ahead of the season, Di Matteo's side currently lie 19th in the table, just two points clear of the relegation zone.

However, Di Matteo said after Saturday's game that he was confident his position was safe.

"It's normal when results are not as expected that everybody questions - it's part of the job - but I've had total support from the club," said the former Chelsea boss.

"There's a team here that is good, it will come good for us. We will keep working. I have faith in the team that, come the end of the season, they will be up there.

"It's been a bad day at the office for sure. We are 10 points from sixth place, so it's still all possible."
