Schalke got their season up and running at the sixth time of asking with a comprehensive 4-0 win over a tired Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday.

Breel Embolo scored twice with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Leon Goretzka also on target to lift some of the pressure off Schalke coach Markus Weinzierl.

After two wins from two in the Europa League, the Royal Blues now have their first points on the board in the Bundesliga, with Ingolstadt and Hamburg slipping into the bottom two as a result.

Gladbach, who had pushed Barcelona all the way in the Champions League in midweek, remain in ninth on 10 points after missing an opportunity to move up to second with a win.

In Sunday's other game, mid-table Mainz frustrated Wolfsburg, who had to settle for their third goalless draw of the season.
