Tottenham are "strong contenders" to win the Premier League after their 2-0 victory over Manchester City, according to Stuart Pearce.

An Aleksandar Kolarov own goal and a Dele Alli strike in the first half consigned Pep Guardiola's side to their first defeat of the season.

The win moved Tottenham up to second in the table, just one point behind Manchester City - meaning the north London club continued their best-ever start to a league campaign.

"They are strong, strong contenders," Pearce told Sky Sports News HQ. "The same can be said for Arsenal and Liverpool at this time. There are question marks about Manchester United, who have been a little bit up and down. And they haven't found the formula yet at Chelsea."

Tottenham moved in front after only nine minutes, with Manchester City looking defensively vulnerable for the first time in the Premier League this season.

"This was typical of goals change games. It gave Spurs a massive lift and shook the Man City invincibility tag that we've been talking about this season," Pearce added.

"Tottenham proved maybe Harry Kane and Dembele were not a bigger loss than we thought they might be. It was a great result for them."

"You have to look at the fixtures they've [Manchester City] have had this season. They've been to Old Trafford but they haven't played Liverpool, Arsenal or those at the top part of the league.

"When the big hitters play each other, which they do in the next six weeks, we'll have a true reflection of where the league sits."
