Bastian Schweinsteiger gets a huge ovation from the Manchester United fans as he made his first appearance of the season

Bastian Schweinsteiger got a huge ovation from the Manchester United fans as he made his first appearance of the season.

The German, who looked to be on the way out of United in the summer upon the arrival of Jose Mourinho, was introduced with just a few minutes remaining at Old Trafford during the 4-1 win over West Ham in the EFL Cup last eight.

Schweinsteiger, 32, hadn't played for the club since the 1-0 win over Manchester City in March, but came on with a smile on his face as the home fans gave him a hero's welcome.

The midfielder was told he had no first-team future when Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford and made to train with the club's youth and reserve players, before being omitted from United's Europa League squad.

The 121-cap former Germany international's position looked increasingly bleak when he was written off as an asset in the club's financial figures for the year ending June 30 2016.

He was allowed to talk to other clubs about a transfer, amidst interest from the MLS, yet opted to stay in Manchester and await a change in circumstances.
