Both Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville felt Ross Barkley should have been sent off for his late tackle on Jordan Henderson in the Merseyside derby

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher believe Everton midfielder Ross Barkley deserved a red card for his challenge on Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson on Mersey Monday.

Sadio Mane's stoppage-time winner at Goodison Park secured the three points for Jurgen Klopp's side, who move up to second in the Premier League table, six points behind leaders Chelsea.

Before the goal, the main talking point was referee Mike Dean's decision to yellow card Barkley for his tackle on Henderson.

The Everton midfielder went in late on his England team-mate, but Dean awarded a free-kick and a booking rather than sending off the 23-year-old.

On the tackle, Henderson told Sky Sports after the game: "I know Ross well, he's a good lad and we are good friends. I think he just mistimed the tackle.

"After the game he apologised. Thankfully I am alright. It was a little bit late but you are going to get those in derby games."

Jordan Henderson said Ross Barkley apologised for his second-half challenge at Goodison Park.

Speaking on Monday Night Football after the game, Carragher and Neville both felt the tackle warranted a straight red card.

Carragher said: "He should have been sent off. Jordan Henderson's interview afterwards was fantastic, that's how a proper pro should react. It's a red card, it's a shocking tackle."

And Neville agreed with his Sky Sports colleague, adding: "It was a brilliant interview from Henderson. It's a shocker of a challenge and it could have broken his leg.

"To be fair he said that Ross apologised to him and rightly so. Forget the fact they are [England] team-mates, they should not pull out of tackles just because they are playing for England together, but it is a really naughty challenge.

"We were critical of [Marcos] Rojo with the two-footed challenge, and this is one that you get your foot planted in the ground. It's a shocker.

"There were a lot of question marks before the game about where the referee was from and the fact it was his first Merseyside derby, but he refereed the game very well.

"[Still] It's a red card and referees should know which are the most dangerous challenges."
