Real Madrid's transfer ban has been reduced following a hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

In April, the game's governing body FIFA imposed a one-year suspension - effectively two transfer windows - over alleged breaches of its regulations with respect to the registration of a number of minor players.

In September, Real filed an appeal at the CAS requesting that the sanctions be lifted and following a hearing at its headquarters in Lausanne on December 14 a decision was taken to half the suspension.

They remain banned from registering new players this January but will be able to make signings in next summer's window.

In a statement, CAS said: "The appeal of the Spanish club has been partially upheld. As a consequence, the decision rendered by the FIFA Appeal Committee on 8 April 2016 is set aside and replaced by a CAS decision in which the following elements of the FIFA AC decision have been modified:

"Real Madrid CF is banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for one entire transfer period (previously two); Real Madrid CF is ordered to pay a fine to FIFA of 240,000 Swiss francs (previously 360,000). Finally, the reprimand imposed by FIFA is maintained."
