Mark Hughes was disappointed that individual and collective mistakes cost Stoke points in their 4-1 defeat to Liverpool after a bright start to the game

Stoke manager Mark Hughes admitted his side were their own worst enemy after a number of mistakes saw them fall to a 4-1 defeat at Liverpool on Tuesday.

The visitors had begun the match brightly and took the lead courtesy of a Jonathan Walters header after just 12 minutes, but goals from Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino sent Liverpool into the break ahead.

A Giannelli Imbula own goal and Daniel Sturridge's first Premier League goal of the season meant Liverpool cut Chelsea gap at the top to six and Hughes felt his side should have got more out of the game at Anfield.

"We are disappointed you look at the goals collectively and individually and we didn't do our jobs in terms of the goals we conceded and that is disappointing, because we came here with a really positive game plan and for the most part, particularly in the first half," Hughes said.

"I thought we caused Liverpool real problems and didn't allow them to play the game they wanted to play.

"We had great chances, could have made it 2-0 when Joe [Allen] got a shot off and [Simon] Mignloet made a good save in all fairness to the boy, but then we made mistakes and found ourselves 2-1 down. On our first half-showing we deserved more out of the game."

Glen Johnson failed to clear a Sadio Mane cross, instead choosing to control the ball, allowing Lallana to score and Ryan Shawcross' woeful back-pass fell to Sturridge, who made no mistake and buried the fourth and Hughes - who has not won away to Liverpool as manager - rued the costly errors.

"You look at the goals on an individual basis and we should have done better. Glen Johnson should have cleared the ball for the equaliser, clearly Ryan [Shawcross] has made a mistake at the end, take those two out and it is certainly an opportunity missed.

"We will look ahead to Chelsea and formulate something for that and hopefully not make mistakes defensively like we did today and we will give it a go just like we did today."
