Rochdale made it 10 home wins in a row as they closed the year with a 2-1 victory against Shrewsbury at Spotland.
First-half goals from Ian Henderson and Steven Davies proved enough to keep Keith Hill's men in fourth place while Ivan Toney's late strike was no more than consolation for the struggling Shrews, who remain in the bottom four.
Chesterfield stay below them after losing 1-0 at Port Vale, who had Michael Brown in charge for the first time, courtesy of a second-half goal from Jerome Thomas.
MK Dons moved above fellow strugglers Swindon with a 3-2 home win. A Kieran Agard double had the Milton Keynes club in control but Luke Norris halved the deficit before half-time. Nicky Maynard restored the Dons' two-goal cushion before Raphael Rossi Branco hit back again for Swindon.
At the other end of the table, Millwall are only outside the play-off places on goal difference after a 2-1 home win against Gillingham.
Millwall withstood late pressure to beat the nine-man Gills and record their third consecutive league win after goals from Lee Gregory and Fred Onyedinma. Paul Konchesky saw red for his second yellow in eight minutes before Bradley Dack's 25-yard shot gave the visitors hope, but then he too was sent off in injury time.
