Pawel Wszolek struck with just three minutes left as QPR won 2-1 at Wolves to end their miserable run of form in the Sky Bet Championship.
Promotion-chasing Sheffield Wednesday scored in stoppage time to draw 1-1 with Preston at Deepdale, while Gianfranco Zola's Birmingham came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at 10-man Barnsley.
Huddersfield and Blackburn drew 1-1 in the early game and struggling Wigan claimed a valuable point thanks to a 0-0 draw at Derby.
The forward had missed a chance just before the break but made no mistake from the edge of the six-yard box after Wszolek had crossed low from the right.
The lead did not last long, Dave Edwards of Wolves scoring his sixth goal in nine games just after the hour when he neatly volleyed home after Helder Costa had crossed.
But Wszolek found the net in the closing stages, stretching to poke a low shot past Carl Ikeme after the ball had run kindly for him to send QPR up to 19th, five points clear of the drop zone.
Preston, who had two goals disallowed in a dominant second half, finally got the breakthrough when Greg Cunningham was slipped in behind the defence on the left edge of the area and his low cross deflected in off the unfortunate Hutchinson.
And the hosts came close to doubling that lead five minutes later as Aiden McGeady's strike from 20 yards cannoned back off the post.
However Wednesday pushed hard late on and Adam Reach struck in the fourth and final minute of second-half stoppage-time, smashing the ball home after a goalmouth scramble to keep the Owls in the top six.
The draw ended a run of three straight victories for the visitors, who missed the chance to jump up to third in the table.

Derby were strong favourites to beat the relegation strugglers but Wigan had the better chances and would have won with better finishing.

Brentford and Norwich ground out a goalless draw in the early evening clash which saw the visitors finish with 10 men.
