Oxford boss Michael Appleton distanced himself from the vacant England U21 job after his side knocked Championship club Rotherham out of the FA Cup.

The League One team progressed to the fourth round with a 3-2 win thanks to goals from former Miller Ryan Taylor, Phil Edwards and substitute Kane Hemmings.

Chris Maguire also missed a first-half penalty against his former club when the score was goalless but his miss ultimately didn't affect the result.

After beating Birmingham in the EFL Cup, it was another positive for Appleton - but having been mentioned as a possible U21 replacement for England manager Gareth Southgate, he has had played down the link.

He said: "I think it's difficult for any manager to be brave enough to say they wouldn't be interested in a role like that but the reality is it is just pure speculation.

"It is a fantastic role for whoever does get the job. The remit of what they are looking for means people put two and two together and think 'he ticks a lot of boxes'.

"I am sure it was Mark Warburton (linked) the previous week and I am sure it will be someone else next week.

Appleton was pleased with the way his League One side forced the upset against Rotherham and added: "I was delighted with the first half performance. Only coming in one up was a disappointment.

"Rotherham came on really strong and we didn't really get out of the blocks in the second half. To be as resilient as we were was pleasing. We knew the game was there to be taken."
