Crewe Alexandra have sacked manager Steve Davis following a seven-match winless run.

Academy director David Artell has been named as Davis' successor with immediate effect and will take charge of next Saturday's home match against Luton Town.

The 3-0 defeat away at Mansfield Town on Saturday proved to be Davis' final match at the helm and left Crewe in 18th place in Sky Bet League Two, just seven points clear of the relegation zone.

A club statement read: "Crewe Alexandra can confirm that we have parted company with first-team manager Steve Davis.

"The club would like to thank Steve for his service and endeavour as both manager and previously in his role as assistant manager.

"The football club wishes Steve well and every success for the future.

Davis was appointed Crewe manager in November 2011 and led the club to promotion via the Sky Bet League Two play-offs in his first season in charge, defeating Cheltenham Town 2-0 at Wembley.

Crewe remained in League One for three seasons and during that period enjoyed another trip back to the national stadium, winning the Football League Trophy with a 2-0 victory over Southend United in 2013.

However, Davis has been unable to inspire a bid for promotion back to League One following relegation last April and has been relieved of his duties having claimed just six wins from his 25 league matches this season.
