Two weeks after Roy Carroll's notorious Pedro Mendes gaffe, United travelled to Anfield in early 2005 looking to keep pace with Premier League pace-setters Chelsea and defending champions Arsenal.
And it proved to be the perfect platform for a fresh-faced Rooney, returning to Merseyside for the first time following his his big-money move from Everton, to endear himself to the United faithful.
Diego Forlan and Ryan Giggs had punished high-profile Jerzy Dudek errors on United's previous two trips to Anfield, and the Reds stopper was left with egg on his face for a third time.
The Pole allowed Rooney's tame 25-yard effort to whistle under his body into the back of the net as Rooney sealed a third-consecutive victory at the home of United's biggest rivals.
