Carlos Tevez insists his wages at Shanghai Shenhua are not high as reported.
The Argentina striker was formally introduced at the Chinese Super League club on Saturday, after his £9m transfer from Boca Juniors.
Tevez will reportedly earn around £610,000 a week - making him the highest paid player in world football.
However, regarding his wages, the former Manchester City and Manchester United forward said: "The salary amount that people talk about on the internet is far more than I the actual one.
"I have never spoken about my salary in China when I was in Argentina. I think it shouldn't be spoken publicly out of respect for others."
Tevez landed in China on Thursday, mobbed by supporters and media at Shanghai airport.
He said: "As soon as I arrived and was greeted by so many fans here the other day, I suddenly realised that I have a new home.
"Mr Zhou Jun (deputy general manager of Shanghai Shenhua) showed his great faith in me when I met him in Argentina. The club needs quality players like me to improve.
"It is still a very difficult decision for me. I brought some of my relatives with me but my parents are still in Argentina because of the long distance."
