Newcastle fought back to win their top-of-the-table clash at Brighton after a fortunate finish from Mo Diame levelled the score

Mo Diame scored an equaliser for Newcastle in the most fortuitous of circumstances at Brighton on Tuesday night.

Chasing a leveller after Glenn Murray's early penalty for the Seagulls, the Toon finally pulled it back to 1-1 after 81 minutes as Christian Atsu's scuffed shot from the edge of the area flicked off Daryl Murphy before hitting Diame and looping past the helpless Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale and into the top corner.

The Seagulls looked all set to go four points clear at the top of the Sky Bet Championship table having led for so long at the Amex, but Rafa Benitez's Newcastle side soon turned it around and Ayoze Perez scored a late goal to make it 2-1 and nick the victory.

"It was lucky, but this is football," Diame told Sky Sports after the game. "The team worked hard and it's a massive three points for us.

"We've got Huddersfield and Reading [both away] coming up and it's going to be very difficult but we're going to fight. We know the quality we have and we've got to show it on the pitch."
