Romelu Lukaku needs to improve his game and is far from the "finished product", Stuart Pearce told Premier League Daily.

The Everton striker has scored 21 Premier League goals this season and speculation is mounting over his future with Sky sources understanding he has told the club he won't sign a new deal.

After a quiet display from Belgium's 23-year-old in Saturday's Merseyside derby defeat, Pearce told Sky Sports News HQ: "I don't think he is the end product. I have looked at him and I can understand why [Jose] Mourinho moved him on at Chelsea.

"Some parts of his game are outstanding, other parts need work and that is the hold-up play and the interchange."

Stories have gathered momentum on Lukaku in recent weeks with the forward questioning Everton's ambitions and needing the "platform" to become one of Europe's best strikers.

Pearce is in no doubt that Lukaku has the attributes to become an outstanding talent and doesn't write off Mourinho from re-signing the Belgian international and acquiring services at Old Trafford.

"When he turns and faces the goal and as a physical specimen he ticks all the boxes," added Pearce.

"They're talking about him being a £50m plus player. If he solved those problems that he needs to work on then he could be a sensational talent.

"At the moment he is a very good talent in the Premier League. If he felt as if he was the piece of the jigsaw that is missing at United and he's going to take them forward I don't think Mourinho would have any problems putting money down for him."
