Mino Raiola: Who is the super-agent behind the Paul Pogba transfer controversy?

Agent Mino Raiola is demanding a €20m fee for his part in the deal which would take Paul Pogba to Manchester United

Mino Raiola is the super-agent at the centre of FIFA's investigation into Paul Pogba's world-record move from Juventus to Manchester United.

The transfer is being looked into after a new book called Football Leaks: The Dirty Business of Football claimed Raiola is set to earn up to £41m from Pogba's £89m return to Old Trafford.

But who exactly is Raiola? And how did he become one of the most powerful football agents around? We profile the man pulling the strings in the transfer market.

What's his background?

Carmine 'Mino' Raiola was born in Salerno in southern Italy but grew up in the Dutch city of Haarlem after moving to Holland at the age of one.

He worked in his family's Italian restaurant as a youngster before enrolling at law school and taking his first steps into football as a youth player for local side HFC Haarlem.

The club spotted his entrepreneurial flair and made him their sporting director at the age of just 19, but it wasn't long before he moved on to join Sport-Promotion, a football agency which looked after a number of high-profile Dutch players.

Raiola was involved in the double-deal that took Dennis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk from Ajax to Inter Milan for a combined fee of £10.4m in 1993, but he soon left the company to go it solo.

The first major deal he brokered on his own was Pavel Nedved's move from Sparta Prague to Lazio for £1.2m after his impressive displays for the Czech Republic at Euro 96.

Raiola facilitated Nedved's £25m move from Lazio to Juventus two years later as his reputation rapidly grew, and business has been booming ever since.

FIFA has requested further information on Paul Pogba's move to Manchester United.

Raiola, who speaks seven languages, is known as a confrontational character who has had high-profile falling outs with a number of clubs and managers, notably Sir Alex Ferguson, who blamed him for Pogba's departure from Old Trafford in 2012.

He now operates primarily from Monaco, but he also completed the £7m purchase of the Miami villa previously occupied by Al Capone shortly after closing the Pogba deal. It's a fitting match for someone jokingly compared to a character from The Sopranos by one of his best-known clients.

Who are his clients?

Pogba is one of many high-profile players on Raiola's roster. The 49-year-old's most lucrative client is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He has represented the Swede since his days as a youngster at Ajax, brokering every one of his money-spinning transfers around Europe. Raiola reportedly secured him a £367,640-per-week basic salary at Old Trafford.

Raiola facilitated Henrikh Mkhitaryan's £26.3m move from Borussia Dortmund to Old Trafford last summer, while his client list also includes Romelu Lukaku, who is expected to leave Everton for big money this summer, and Watford's Etienne Capoue.

Elsewhere in Europe, Raiola counts Mario Balotelli, Blaise Matuidi, Gregory van der Wiel and Italian prodigy Gianluigi Donnarumma among his clients. Back in 2010, he brokered Robinho's £32.5m move from Real Madrid to Manchester City.

What do people say about him?

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: "I didn't really know what sort of person to expect, probably some sort of pinstriped fella with an even bigger gold watch. But who the hell turned up? A bloke in jeans and a Nike T-shirt - and that belly, like one of the guys in The Sopranos.

"And then when we ordered, what do you think they brought us? A few pieces of sushi with avocado and prawns? We got a massive spread, enough to feed five people, and he started stuffing himself."

Manchester United are reportedly paying Zlatan Ibrahimovic more than £19m per year.

Sir Alex Ferguson: "There are one or two football agents I simply do not like. And Mino Raiola, Paul Pogba's agent, is one of them. I distrusted him from the moment I met him.

"We had Paul under a three-year contract, and it had a one-year renewal option which we were eager to sign. But Raiola suddenly appeared on the scene and our first meeting was a fiasco.

"He and I were like oil and water. From then on, our goose was cooked because Raiola had been able to ingratiate himself with Paul and his family and the player signed with Juventus."

Henrikh Mkhitaryan: "I am reserved, while he is crazy. However, we've always agreed on one thing: I listen to his advice."

Dutch journalist and friend, Thijs Slegers: "He is extremely loyal to the people who are in his inner circle and that means his players. To him they are like family. And that's why he is the perfect negotiator because you always want to do the best for your family."
