Tottenham's preparations for the new season suffered a setback when Roma inflicted their first pre-season defeat on a feisty night in New Jersey - but were they hard done by?
Supporters at the Red Bull Arena were treated to a five-goal thriller as Roma snatched a dramatic 3-2 victory in stoppage-time, but it was a night to forget for the officials.
Diego Perotti gave Roma a contentious lead from the spot after Radja Nainggolan's cross struck Cameron Carter-Vickers' arm at close range.
The referee did not initially point to the spot, but then awarded a penalty after consulting his fourth official and not the VAR tools that were available.
After conceding a harsh penalty, Tottenham had further cause to feel aggrieved when Harry Kane was upended in the area by former Spurs team-mate Federico Fazio. To Kane's amazement, the referee somehow failed to spot the infringement and waved away the appeals.
Having failed to control the game, things threatened to boil over when Kane caught Kostas Manolas with a late challenge.
The ensuing melee saw Mauricio Pochettino vent his frustration at the fourth official, who appeared to try to send the Spurs boss to the stands. But the Argentine remained in the dugout to witness Roma doubling their lead, big-money summer signing Cengiz Under pouncing after Kevin Wimmer failed to clear Kevin Strootman's cross.
Spurs did manage to haul themselves level though thanks to late strikes from Harry Winks (87) and Vincent Janssen (90+1) but there was still time for yet more controversy as Marco Tumminello, after appearing to impede Wimmer, hit Roma's winner in the third minute of added time.
