Liverpool have been drawn against Hoffenheim while Celtic face Kazakhstan side Astana in the Champions League play-off round.

Friday's draw means Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will return to his native Germany, while striker Roberto Firmino will face his former club.

Liverpool are competing in European football's premier competition for only the second time in eight seasons after finishing fourth in the Premier League last term.

Klopp will know Hoffenheim well from his time coaching in Germany, but the Bundesliga club will present a difficult obstacle as the Reds look to reach the Champions League group stage.

Reflecting on the draw, Klopp told the club's website: "Very interesting. Actually, it was exactly what I expected when I had a look - if there's a choice we always seem to take the German team! Sorry!

"It was clear from the first moment when we knew who we could face that there would be no easy game. It's Hoffenheim and that's for sure not an easy game.

"But we should always not forget what they thought in the moment they saw the draw - it's not the best thing they could get. I'm completely fine with it, happy to know and now we can start preparing.

"They are a strong side, how everybody can imagine. When you are fourth in Germany you are a strong side. It's a very interesting club. They have a lot of really good young players."

Coached by 30-year-old Julian Nagelsmann - the youngest manager in Europe's top five leagues - Hoffenheim finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season.

Celtic beat Rosenborg 1-0 in the Champions League Qualifier

Celtic's reward for their third qualifying round victory over Rosenborg of Norway is to once again make the near 8,000-mile round trip to Kazakhstan and play Astana, who they beat in the third qualifying round last season.

The first legs will be played on August 15 and 16, with the return fixtures on August 22 and 23.

Spanish side Sevilla have been drawn against last season's Turkish league runners-up Istanbul Basaksehir, who boast Emmanuel Adebayor and Gael Clichy in their ranks and eliminated Club Brugge in the third qualifying round.

Napoli, who came third in Serie A last season, were handed a difficult draw against Nice, third in France's Ligue 1 and victors against Ajax in the third qualifying round.
