WATCH: Did Mikel Merino dive at Swansea?

Newcastle gave recovering Rafa Benitez a timely boost with a 1-0 win at Swansea- but Mikel Merino's first-half dive will have left a sour taste in the mouth.

A passive first half at the Liberty Stadium ended in pulsating fashion as both teams created a flurry of chances before the interval.

After Lukasz Fabianski has produced a stunning save to deny Joselu, Newcastle vehemently appealed for a penalty when Merino went to ground under an Alfie Mawson challenge.

Referee Mike Jones was having none of it though, waving the Spaniard back to his feet - but should the Newcastle midfielder have seen yellow?

Replays showed Mawson didn't make any contact with Merino, with the incident leaving Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp amazed.

"It's an incredible dive," he said. "I thought penalty all day long at first but that's poor from Merino."
