Brentford striker Neal Maupay produced one of the worst misses of the season as he failed to score an open goal from six yards out.

Having beaten the Cardiff goalkeeper, Maupay conspired to miss from close range with the goal at his mercy. To make matters worse, Brentford went on to lose the game 2-0.

"Neal knows he should have scored and 999 times out of a thousand he does," said Brentford boss Dean Smith. "He's had one of those moments you don't want to see on a football pitch.

"But he reacted after half-time and he got into some really good goalscoring positions, but was unlucky, it was one of those days for him.

"Only Neal Maupay will tell you if he's been too clever, centre-forwards live and die by goals and we didn't take our chances today."

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock, meanwhile, believes Maupay got what he deserved for trying to be too clever in front of goal.

He said: "I can't blame anybody but the lad himself for that miss. I have no sympathy at all, he's tried to be clever and give someone the eye rather than put it in."
