PGMOL head of referees Mike Riley is confident the Video Assistant Referee system will be a success in English football

Mike Riley is confident the Video Referee Assistant (VAR) system will benefit English football and will do so while keeping disruption to "an absolute minimum".

VAR will make appear in English football for the first time in Monday's FA Cup third-round tie between Brighton and Crystal Palace.

Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg between Chelsea and Arsenal, live on Sky Sports Football, will be the second game of VAR's trial and Mike Riley, who is head of referees at Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), says the system has great potential.

Riley told Sky Sports News: "We've been working really hard on trying to make this as efficient as possible.

"Typically it takes around 30-40 seconds to analyse some footage and make a decision. Obviously the faster we can do that, the better, and we need quite a high bar.

"We only want to intervene where there is a clear and obvious error. If we do that, the interruption to the game will be kept an absolute minimum."

Riley says it will take VAR up to two years "to get to a stage where it really benefits football", but is excited to put the system to the test.

"We've been working on this for the last two years, building up to this moment," he said. "The referees are excited about the opportunity to do it.

"You actually want something to happen to demonstrate how good this potentially could be, but at the same time not detract from a great game of football."
