But despite the victory, Merson and Wise insisted their signings have been poor this season and said there will be problems next season, even if Antonio Conte is still in charge.
They also reflected on Southampton's 0-0 draw with Leicester - a result which leaves Mark Hughes' side deep in relegation trouble.
