Former Arsenal defender Lauren believes Luis Enrique is the right man to replace Arsene Wenger

Former Arsenal defender Lauren believes Luis Enrique is the right man to replace Arsene Wenger as the club's manager.

Wenger's 22-year reign as Gunners boss will come to an end at Huddersfield on Sunday and speculation continues to mount over who will replace him.

Lauren, who was an integral part of Arsenal's double-winning squad of 2001/02 and Invincibles team two seasons later, thinks the former Barcelona coach is the best fit.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri is currently the favourite to replace Wenger, but Luis Enrique is thought to be the other name at the top of Arsenal's shortlist.

"I would go for Luis Enrique because of a few facts," Lauren said.

"The style of play, there are some parallels with Barcelona, the way they play is the 'Arsenal way'.

"He's got that killer instinct that you need to manage a big team… you need a manager that has that big personality and the animal instincts to control everything."

Luis Enrique succeeded in rejuvenating Barcelona when he arrived at the Camp Nou 2014, claiming two La Liga titles and a Champions League trophy before departing in 2017.

However, transforming an Arsenal side that has failed to capture a league title since that 2003/04 promises to be a formidable challenge.

Arsene Wenger is not planning to retire any time soon and the manager says he has plenty of opportunities to weigh up once he has finished the season at Arsenal

Despite Wenger's failure to keep Arsenal battling for Premier League titles in recent seasons, Lauren is adamant his former boss is the club's greatest manager.

"He is the greatest manager [I played under] and also the greatest manager of Arsenal," the former Cameroon international added.

"He took the transition from George Graham to a different style of play."

"He made so many innovations to the institution and also in the game that allowed all of us to improve."

Arsenal face Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Wednesday evening before Wenger's finale at Huddersfield on Sunday.
