Cardiff have signed goalkeeper Alex Smithies from QPR on a four-year deal.

QPR are set to receive a guaranteed £3m for Smithies, with a further £500k if Cardiff stay in the Premier League next season.

Huddersfield Town will also benefit from the deal, having included a sell-on clause when they sold the keeper to QPR for £2m in 2015.

The former England U19 keeper was the hero of Huddersfield's League One play-off final win over Sheffield United in 2012, when he saved two penalties and scored the winner in an epic shoot-out.

Reid set for Cardiff switch

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock wanted competition for Neil Etheridge, who helped lead the club to promotion to the Premier League last season.

He is Cardiff's third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Greg Cunningham from Preston North End and Josh Murphy from Norwich.
