Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino has offered his support to Manchester United's Luke Shaw after the full-back suffered a double leg break on Tuesday night.
Shaw, who has started all of United's eight games this season, broke both his tibia and fibula when challenged by PSV's Hector Moreno during the Champions League match in Eindhoven and is expected to be out for at least six months.
The England full-back was managed by Pochettino during his time at Southampton before his move to Old Trafford and the Spurs coach revealed the defender was more upbeat after an operation on Wednesday morning.
Pochettino told Sky Sports News HQ: "I feel very sorry for him. I watched it happen on TV and I was sick. My relationship with him was close and I spoke with him this morning. He was much better today but obviously it is difficult when you have got this type of injury and I can only give him my support and wish him a speedy recovery.
"It's difficult because he had been crying and you can understand that, after the injury and pain he suffered and all the consequences of this situation. It is a difficult moment for him."
Among those sending their best wishes to Shaw were his former club Southampton, and the full back responded: 'Thank you, you don't know how much you as a club mean to me, thank you so much I really appreciate it.'
Shaw also tweeted his gratitude to supporters wishing him well, saying: 'Thank you everyone for your messages, words can't describe how gutted I am, my road to recovery starts now, I will come back stronger.'
United players also posted messages of support for their team-mate on the social media site, with Ander Herrera writing: "Sad about the defeat but much sadder about Luke's injury. Come back soon my friend."
Phil Jones wrote: "Disappointing result tonight but thoughts are with Luke, stay strong mate!" United keeper David de Gea added: "Defeat hurts, but @LukeShaw23's injury hurts even more. We hope you come back even stronger!"
