Sunderland's Dick Advocaat is hoping to draw on previous experience when he takes on Manuel Pellegrini's Manchester City in the League Cup.

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat says he will quit his position the minute he thinks he is not the right man to take the club forward.

However, despite Sunderland's poor start to the Premier League season, Advocaat does not think that time has come yet.

The Black Cats are bottom of the table with just two points from six matches, following their 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday.

But Advocaat says is not rueing his decision to return to the Stadium of Light, after masterminding the club's survival last season.

Having promised his wife he would retire from club management, Advocaat stepped down after saving Sunderland from the drop to the Championship, but was subsequently persuaded to change his mind and signed a one-year contract.

"No regrets," said Advocaat, ahead of Tuesday's Capital One Cup tie at home to Manchester City.

Let's be clear. If I feel that it is better that somebody else takes over, I am the first man who will say 'better for the club, I will go'. Believe me.

"I'll know first and I am very far away from that. I still have a good feeling about this squad and, if we get 40 points, I think we have enough."

Advocaat must now attempt to steady the Sunderland ship against the Premier League leaders Manchester City, who beat them in the League Cup final at Wembley in March 2014, with Advocaat keen to further annoy opposite number Manuel Pellegrini.

He led Russian side Zenit St Petersburg to an aggregate victory over Pellegrini's Villarreal in February 2008 on the way to UEFA Cup glory, and the Chilean was not happy about it.

Advocaat said with a smile: "When I was the manager of Zenit, we played against Villarreal and I kicked him out of the UEFA Cup, and he was very angry because he did not expect that.

"He's a very, very nice man."
